Capital Defense — the capital is being rebuilt
It has been quiet above the walls, but the work beneath them never stopped. Capital Defense is moving to a new engine — Utgard Engine.
Its author is Vilgeforc, creator of D2Info and one of the longest-standing members of the Disciples community. For two and a half years he rebuilt Disciples II by hand — mechanic by mechanic, window by window — with the support of professional programmer Alternativehood. A strong team of experienced enthusiast developers has since gathered around the engine.
Utgard Engine itself has just been announced — follow the engine news on Telegram: https://t.me/+FbtIl6PCi6A3OTFi
This is why there have been no patches for a while: all our effort went into porting the mode. The old foundation had hit its ceiling — the mod had to be held together by tens of thousands of lines of hooks on top of a 2002 game. Utgard Engine removes that ceiling.
What the new engine brings:
- Cross-platform. Built from the ground up for Windows, Linux, macOS and Android. Downloadable builds will come later.
- Multiplayer out of the box. Online matches through a lobby, dedicated match servers, hotseat. The server runs the match and resolves battles — every player sees the same game.
- Widescreen. Battles and windows scale to any resolution.
- Freedom for modding. Rules are written in Lua, UI in QML, mods plug in as modules. Mod data is verified by hash, so everyone plays by the same rules online.
- A new map editor. Built right into the game: edit squads, inventories, buildings and object properties in place, then launch the map and test it immediately.
- Faster fixes. Balance and bugs are fixed in scripts without rebuilding the game. Updates arrive through the launcher as small packages.
- Original content. Maps and scenarios of the original game are being carried over, and Semga and Slasher MNS run as modules.
Waves, scouting, the forge, shops, the power horn, the fusion portal and the elixir of ascension already run on Utgard Engine.
When: roughly in a month to a month and a half — late October or early November. We will announce the exact date separately.
Until then, keep playing 0.6.8 and keep sending bug reports and suggestions — all of it goes into the new version.
The capital will stand. See you at the walls!
